The Impact of Frailty on Outcomes of Open-Globe Injury in the Geriatric Population

      Global metadata forecast that humans are nearing a demographic crossroads, whereby an unprecedented proportion will reach geriatric age while burdened with chronic disease. Correspondingly, a subpopulation with profound physiological impairment, or frailty, is expected to emerge in the coming decades. Frailty is a constellation of biopsychosocial deficits that deplete an organism's resilience to stress. The surgical oncology and critical care fields have leveraged frailty's utility in predicting postoperative morbidity and mortality, spurring the development of risk-stratification indices.

      The effect of frailty on short-term outcomes after head and neck cancer surgery.
      However, frailty's impact on ocular trauma outcomes has yet to be studied. We investigate the association of frailty with perioperative complications in a nationwide cohort of geriatric patients with open-globe injury (OGI).
